Pinch Pleated Draperies

We Recommend 2½ - 3x's Fullness

Finished measurements are necessary when placing orders

Bracket to bracket measurement -- Window opening plus 7" allows for 3 ½" extension past the window on each side.

Finished width measurement -- Add 12" (overlap and returns) to bracket to bracket measurement. (See example)

Example
Bracket to bracket 60"
Overlap 4"
Returns  8"
Finished Width 72"

Finished Width
diagram
Finished Length -- Floor to top of window plus 5"
Yardage
  • Finished width x fullness ÷ width of fabric = number  of cuts. Increase fullness to the nearest ½ width (e.g. 2.3 rounds up to 2.5).

  • Length + 20" (Double 4" heading and double 5" bottom hems + 2" working loss) ÷ pattern repeat = number of repeats. (If fraction, then round to next highest number.)

  • Multiply number of repeats by repeat length = cut length needed x number of cuts ÷ 36" = yards needed.

Valances

Add color and style to a drapery treatment as well as soften a window that has mini blinds or vertical blinds. Valances are available in many different shapes and sizes; because of these variations, we will be happy to assist you with any questions you might have--please give us a call.

Cornices

Top treatments made from wood, then padded and covered with fabric and cording on bottom and sides only. Inside width of the cornice is always 3" wider than the bracket to bracket width of the drapery. Choose from one of the styles below or send us a drawing. Specify style, finished width, and size of returns.

Rod Pocket Draperies

We recommend 2½ - 3x's fullness

Finished width measurement -- Window opening plus 7", plus 8" (to account for returns).

Finished length measurement -- Floor to top of window plus rod pocket + heading. To help figure rod pocket size and heading size:
size and heading size:
Rod Size Rod Pocket Size Heading Size
Oval Rodding Pocket Size 1 ½" Heading Size 1 ½"
1 3/8" Woodpole Pocket Size 3" Heading Size 3"
2" Woodpole Pocket Size 4 ½" Heading Size 4"
Reg. Continental Pocket Size 5 ½" Heading Size 3"
Mini Continental Pocket Size 3 ½" Heading Size 2"
2" PVC Pocket Size 4 ½" Heading Size 4"
3" PVC Pocket Size 6 ½" Heading Size 5"
4" PVC   Heading Size 6"

Yardage
  • Finished width x fullness ÷ width of fabric = number of cuts needed.
  • Length + 20 ÷ pattern repeat = number of repeats (round to next number if fraction).
  • Multiply number of repeats by repeat length = cut length needed x number of cuts ÷ 36" = yards needed.

Top Treatments

Swags, Cascades, and Jabots

Swags vary in width and length, however, most are approximately 14"-25" in depth. Many swags are made with odd numbers of swags with a cascade on each side. The inside width of the swag is always 3" wider than the bracket to bracket width of the drapery. Each swag may cover 18" to 30" in width without having to be seamed.

Fabric required if railroaded Allow same amount of
yardage for lining or
contrasting fabric
18" to 30" wide = 2 yards per swag
30" to 40" wide = 2 ½ yards per swag

Cascades

Cascades are approximately 36" long and self lined.

Fabric required Allow same amount of
yardage for lining or
contrasting fabric
Up to 36" long = 5 yards per pair
Up to 48" long = 6 yards per pair

Jabots

The length of the Jabots should be the same as the face depth of the swag at the longest point.

Fabric required
1 yard per Jabot when self lined
½ yard per Jabot for contrasting lining

Shades

The following are just some Samples of Roman Shades

Choose from the different styles of Roman Shades such as the Soft Fold or Flat Fold Shades. The Soft Fold Shade has a continuous fold of fabric regardless of the shade position. The fold is sewn in place and remains folded when the shade is raised or lowered.

Soft Fold Roman

Yardage
  • Finished width + 6" ÷ fabric width = number of cuts
  • Finished length x 2 ½ = cut length
  • Number of cuts x cut length ÷ 36" = number of yards
For print fabrics, add one print pattern for each cut of fabric

Flat Fold

Yardage
  • Finished width of shade + 6" ÷ fabric width = number of cuts
  • Finished length of shade + 20" = cut length
  • Number of cuts x cut length ÷ 36" = number of yards
For print fabrics, add one print pattern for each cut of fabric

Austrian Shades -- Sheers work best to gather triple fullness in the length

Yardage
  • Finished width of shade times 1 ½ ÷ fabric width = number of cuts
  • Finished length of the shade times 3 = cut length
  • Number of cuts x cut length ÷ 36" = number of yards
For print fabrics, add one print pattern for each cut of fabric

Balloon Shades

Balloon Shades are very versatile and are excellent for both a formal or informal look. Box Pleated Balloons are however very tailored and create a formal appearance.

Shirred Balloon

Yardage
  • Shade width x 3 ÷ fabric width = number of cuts
  • Shade length + 24" = cut length
  • Number of cuts x cut length ÷ 36" = number of yards
For print fabrics, add one print pattern for each cut of fabric

Pleated Balloon

Yardage
  • Shade width x 3 ÷ fabric width = number of cuts
  • Shade length + 24" = cut length
  • Number of cuts x cut length ÷ 36" = number of yards
For print fabrics, add one print pattern for each cut of fabric

  • Specify if fabric is to be quilted or un-quilted. If quilted, specify Loom or Custom Hand Guided Quilting and the quilting design.

  • Supply swatch or clear description of fabric with your order.

  • Please be sure to indicate any special treatment desired and allow for additional charges and yardages.

  • All spreads, unless otherwise requested, are made in standard throw sizes with a blind-stitched hemmed edge. All spreads are seamed at the salvages, and on fitted spreads the drops are railroaded.

  • On printed spreads, we match the pattern. A twin throw may have the seams placed on the side of the bed, depending on the width of the fabric.

All items will be made to standard specifications unless specified differently

  • Draperies are 2½ - 3x's fullness.

  • 4" Permanent crinolin heading.

  • 4" Double fold bottom hem is blind-stitched.

  • Side hems are 1" double turned and blind-stitched.

  • All seams are serged, overlocked stitched, and are pattern matched.

  • All seams are hidden at the back of the pleat.

  • Covered lead weights are inserted in corners and at seams.

    Drapery Terminology

  • Blind Stitch - Almost invisible stitch used to hem fabric.

  • Cascades - Are the finishing side pieces, cascading from the swags to a point about 1/3 to ½ the length of the window.

  • Cornices - Top treatments made from wood then padded and covered with fabric.

  • Finished Width - The distance from outside pleat to outside pleat when the center spaces are overlapped. The measurement of the space to be covered or the length of the rod.

  • Heading - The fabric above the rod pocket on gathered draperies and curtains.

  • Hourglass - Fabric with a rod pocket at the top and bottom.

  • Overlap - Center of the draperies on the master carriers.

  • Panel - Is a single unit of drapery of one or more widths.

  • Pleats - The folds formed between each space.

  • Pair - Is two equal panels to cover a desired area.

  • Projection - The distance a rod is set away from the wall usually 1 ½" for sheers, 3 ½" for decorative rods, and 3 ½" to 4" for traverse rods.

  • Railroaded - The term used for turning wide fabrics (108"-118") crosswise, using the width for the length, thus eliminating seams.

  • Return - Is the measurement from the rod to the wall.

  • Rod Pocket - Is a hem, tuck, or sleeve that a rod is inserted into.

  • Valance - Top treatment made of fabric.

  • Weights - 1"x1" square pieces of lead sewn 2 ½" from each edge and on each corner to help drapery hang better.

  • Number of pairs/panels.

  • Whether pair or panel. If panels, specify if left or right stack.

  • Finished Width and Finished Length.

  • Size of Return (we will use 4" unless otherwise specified).
